What and for which holidays did our grandmothers
bake

Ukrainian ritual baking is an important part of folk culture, accompanying many holidays and customs from ancient times. It symbolizes not only delicious food but also spiritual values, traditions, and a connection to our ancestors. Each type of ritual baking has its own symbolic meaning and role in different rituals: weddings, funerals, family gatherings, and seasonal celebrations.

Among the most famous types of ritual baking are korovai (wedding bread), kalach, paska (Easter bread), kalita, zhayvoronky, knysh, rizdvyanyk, medivnyk, palyanytsia, mandryky, and others. For example, korovai is the traditional wedding bread and symbolizes unity, prosperity, and family happiness. It is decorated with dough figurines, including birds and flowers, which have protective meanings. The baking of the korovai is a major ritual that is accompanied by songs and prayers, and only married women, considered lucky in marriage, are involved in this process.

Each type of baking in ritual culture carries deep symbolism related to life cycles, family happiness, and a connection to nature. The shapes, ornaments, and ingredients of the dough have protective functions, often reflecting beliefs about harmony, peace, and health. For instance, the round shape of the korovai or paska symbolizes the sun and the cycle of life, while the use of wheat and honey represents fertility and prosperity.
